A Midnight Snack

Millie woke to the sound of a tinkling electronic tune that was familiar in a way she couldn’t immediately place, to find the other side of the bed empty. She found Trevor standing at the open front door with tears running down his cheeks. An ice cream van idled on the street outside their house.

“What are you doing? Babe?”

“He found me,” Trevor said. His knuckles were white where he gripped the door frame. “After all this time.”

“Who did? Who is that?”

Instead of answering, Trevor pulled on his coat and stepped barefoot into the night.

A metal shutter in the van’s side rattled open as Trevor approached, revealing a lone figure inside. The figure leaned his elbows on the bottom of the window with his head resting in his hands, backlit in a silhouette by the interior lights of the van. The white crescent of his smile was his only visible feature.

Trevor pulled a trembling handful of coins from his coat pocket and stepped to the open window.

“So!” The ice cream man clapped his hands together with a sharp crack. He cocked his head to one side. “Ready to make your choice?”
